Brawley Proudly Completes Renovation of Historic Teachers Building at Hammocks Beach State Park

Brawley was honored to complete construction on the newly renovated Historic Teachers Building, which officially reopened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Juneteenth at Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro, North Carolina.

Originally built in the 1950s, the Teachers Building holds deep historical significance. It once served as a retreat for African American educators and students during segregation, when Hammocks Beach was one of only three state parks accessible to the Black community in North Carolina. The land was first donated to the North Carolina Teachers Association and later given to the state to be preserved and shared.

The ribbon-cutting, held on a day that honors freedom and new beginnings, marked a symbolic fresh start for the building and the community it serves. “We want to bring the community together,” said Brian Strong, Director of State Parks.

Brawley is proud to have played a role in restoring such a meaningful space—one that bridges past and present, and honors the legacy of those who came before.
